Newbie Writing Mistakes Monday–Aim for a Target

Artwork from http://shadzofgray.com/new_page_1.htm After watching a couple episodes of Top Shot with my kiddos, I realized a couple of things. One, since I can’t even hold a virtual gun steady in my video game playing, I have to admit I will never become the world-revered sniper I had hoped to be. The guys and gals on Top Shot are so well-qualified,… Read More

Newbie Writing Mistakes Monday–From Slush to an Agented Rush

(T-shirt on cafepress: http://www.cafepress.com/+i_am_an_editor_womens_pink_tshirt,29403353) So sorry for the bloggy break last week, I was out on a “working” spring break, cleaning and painting the house we’re moving into soon. I wanted to comment today on a post I read over at the Books and Such blog: http://www.booksandsuch.biz/blog/choosing-the-perfect-client-unpublished-authors/. Wendy Lawton says that agents “are seeing too many manuscripts too early. One editor… Read More

Newbie Writing Mistakes Monday–KEEP TRACK OF QUERIES!

This post is going to be short & sweet, because a) the time change, combined with allergy-induced asthma, has brewed the perfect storm of sleep-loss for me, and b) this is an easy one–you probably already do it! Here it is: Keep Good Records of Agents You’ve Queried. When I queried my first book, I figured it would get picked up… Read More

Newbie Writing Mistakes Monday–TAKING CRITICISM

If you’ve been writing for any length of time, and if you’ve let anyone other than your mom read your stuff, you’ve probably run into a little criticism. When I finished my NaNo novel with a dramatic yelp of joy, I knew it was headed straight for publication. No roadblocks. Just sheer, unquestioning acceptance by publishers. Because I was a… Read More

Newbie Writing Mistakes Monday–FORMATTING ISSUES

HAVING FUN… USING RANDOM TYPES OF FONT, SIZE AND SPACING…   I changed the wording of this feature title. Writing Newbie Mistakes Monday, the previous title, could be misconstrued as WAYS to write some newbie mistakes…maybe I’m overthinking it, but I had to change it! This Monday, I thought I’d talk about FORMATTING those rough drafts/MSes, queries, and proposals.  The… Read More

Newbie Writing Mistakes Monday–OBEY THE AGENCY RULES

I wanted to do this series as a vlog, but since I have no clue how to rig that up, for now, I’ll use my words. Mistakes…if you’re anywhere along this writing road, you’ve made some. I’ve made quite a few. Today, I just wanted to talk about one newbie mistake that should be quite self-evident. Don’t ignore the guidelines… Read More

Happy #WestVirginiaDay! You might know that I love Happy #WestVirginiaDay! You might know that I love setting my contemporary mystery series in my home state of WV. What you might not know is that there was a time I wanted nothing more than to move away and spread my wings (somewhere like NYC! Where I wound up living for a year when I got married!). But years down the road, I felt my mountain roots pulling me back. Suddenly, I could see nothing but beauty in these comforting mountains and moody skies and honeysuckled summers. West Virginia is so many things—good and bad as any state is—but it’s entirely unique. My husband once marveled at how many people “came back” to their home state here, even after being gone for years, and I see that all the time. These #Appalachianmountains have a way about them, and it becomes a part of you, a love you don’t want to let go of. I’m a #mountainmama, and I’m glad to bring this truly #wildandwonderful state to readers with my books.
