Nothing New under the Sun

Did cubism originate with Picasso?  Did short, pithy poems originate with Emily Dickinson?  Did vampire stories originate with Stephenie Meyer?  (Okay, you knew I couldn’t resist that one.) The truth is something no artist wants to hear: there really is nothing new under the sun.  Yes, cubism was NEW!  But I gotta think there might be some cave art somewhere… Read More

Hook, Line and Sinker

Yesterday I bungee jumped for the first time, and all would’ve gone well if that cord hadn’t…. Did I hook you yet? Nope, I didn’t REALLY go bungee jumping (although it’s been a wild-girl dream of mine for awhile now). But the purpose of hooks in writing is to pull the reader in so tightly, they don’t want to let… Read More

Getting to the Polished Product

I don’t know what I’m doing blogging, since I have to majorly, MAJORLY rewrite my first chapter of GOD’S DAUGHTER (my Viking novel, if you’re just catching up). BUT I want to share that I’ve joined a historical fiction critique group, and I love it. Who would have thought that this writer (who previously believed that all her words were… Read More

On Rejection and My Attempts to Deal With It

After a stellar and astonishing week, when no less than FOUR agents were requesting my sample chapters/pages, and my children and husband would attest that my happiness was through the roof, I have had a letdown, reject week of almost equal proportions. Two of the bigger historical fiction agents rejected my book, leaving me once again questioning my skill (or… Read More

E-Books vs “Real” Books

You know you’re getting attached to your book when you hate to leave the world you’ve created to actually live your own life! I’m definitely at that point in my book (just one chapter from being HALF DONE! almost 40,000 words down!), where my characters just take on lives of their own. I understand how Stephenie Meyer felt when she… Read More

Querying for Dummies

Speaking of dummies, yes, I totally did query my book to some agents, even in its unfinished state. This is because I got a little crazy when I realized there is another book about my heroine coming out soon (I got this from the underground, can’t reveal my sources…). Thankfully, it’s young adult fiction. Mine is definitely adult. My husband… Read More

Not yet); my first irises of spring; and finally an Etsy decal I’m thinking about getting for my car since I’m such a #tombraider fan and still playing through #TombRaiderRemastered. If you know me or have read any of my #WestVirgini If you know me or have read any of my #WestVirginia-set books, you’ll know I’ve been taken with #TheGreenbrierResort from the moment I first visited it. It’s only an hour from me in #greenbriercountywv. Every year, I love walking around the grounds to see the #tulips—my favorite flower—and this year we caught them at just the right time. If you want to read about it in my books (I do on-the-spot research), check out Undercut and Deadlocked in my #hemlockcreeksuspense series or Fair Trade in my #BarksandBeansCafe #cozymystery series, among others. Setting books in the lovely town of #LewisburgWV is so fun—plenty of great shops and restaurants there, and if you’re ever in town, be sure to drop by The Greenbrier! #authorsofinsta #authorlife #westvirginia #wildandwonderfulwv #wvauthor #appalachianspring #tulips #tulipsofinstagram #tuliplover🌷 #silversisters #marriedloveofmylifeā¤ļø #heatherdaygilbertbooks #mysterylover

But here are some of my own tulips pics and other things I enjoyed this week: 1) got to get #coffee @otterandoakwv cafe with my daughter—always enjoy looking at artwork and the relaxing atmosphere. 2) if you’re from #WestVirginia, you can guess what these are—I cooked some up with fried potatoes this week. Anyone have a favorite ramp recipe to share? 3) my Rembrandt tulips that have candy cane colors, 4) my loud yet loving #flametipsiamese #cat Westley, 5) my grandson’s onesie that cracked me up, 6) more Rembrandt tulips from my #flowerbed.
