Getting Real

Taken around the time I wrote my first novel, five years ago. Dude, time for a discouraging, yet very honest, post. For nearly five years, I’ve checked my e-mails daily, hoping for a word from an agent…and then from a publisher. Sometimes I think I’m going to be certifiable at the end of this experience. I’ve wrestled with grief. I’ve… Read More

Yup, I’m Jumping on the “Bloggy-Break” Train!

Thank you all so much for visiting my guest post at Southern Writers on Wednesday! Loved your comments! So, I’ve decided that since my brain is all but derailed this month, I need to take a blogging break. Still waiting to hear back on submissions for my Viking novel (yes, I’ll freely admit it’s been almost 10 months of waiting… Read More

There are No Shortcuts

Me and my randomly scrawled notes… I’ve thought about blogging this before, then thought, “Nah–it’s too bleak.” But today during Sunday school, as we talked about growing in Christ and maturing in our Christianity, I realized it’s true: There are no shortcuts. Same thing with marriage, or with parenting. You can read every book out there before you give birth,… Read More

Not-So-Deep Writing Thoughts with Heather…

Writing like a fiend, so I just did a brief vlog today! Enjoy and comment below on what you’re writing on…

The Problem with Pinning

Like many writers, I use Pinterest boards to post visuals for my main characters, settings, clothing styles, foods they ate, and on and on.But here’s my problem:Where have all the normal-looking people gone?I love having visuals for my characters, don’t get me wrong. As writers, it’s our job to scope out the beautiful celebs who will doubtless one day star… Read More

Writer Stuff I Wish I’d Known…

After five attempts at writing a deep blogpost, I gave up. I know some of you have asked about my writing journey. So I thought I’d list a few things I wish someone would’ve told me when I started out. I wasn’t blogging then, so I didn’t really have any fiction-writing mentors (though I’ll give a shout-out to Brian Jones,… Read More

Happy #WestVirginiaDay! You might know that I love Happy #WestVirginiaDay! You might know that I love setting my contemporary mystery series in my home state of WV. What you might not know is that there was a time I wanted nothing more than to move away and spread my wings (somewhere like NYC! Where I wound up living for a year when I got married!). But years down the road, I felt my mountain roots pulling me back. Suddenly, I could see nothing but beauty in these comforting mountains and moody skies and honeysuckled summers. West Virginia is so many things—good and bad as any state is—but it’s entirely unique. My husband once marveled at how many people ā€œcame backā€ to their home state here, even after being gone for years, and I see that all the time. These #Appalachianmountains have a way about them, and it becomes a part of you, a love you don’t want to let go of. I’m a #mountainmama, and I’m glad to bring this truly #wildandwonderful state to readers with my books.
